Where did this number come from?
It was featured in American writer Dan Brown’s novel ‘The Lost Symbol.’ The novel was published in 2009 by Doubleday (US) and Transworld (UK).
Why is this a curious number?
In most works of fiction, whether it be a movie or writing, phone numbers used by the writers are of the 555 variety (e.g. 555-555-3592). The risk of using a number not starting with 555 begins with the dilemma that it could be a real phone number owned by someone from that area. This leads to privacy issues. Despite this trend, Dan Brown chose to go the other way, using 2023295746 as the character, Peter Solomon’s phone number.
What’s the mystery surrounding the number?
After the release of the novel, it became #1 on the New York Time’s Best Seller list within its’ first three weeks. With such large sales and attention, the calls to the number were inevitable. Readers chose to satisfy their curiosity entailing the mysterious phone number. Once dialed, the caller was sent to the voicemail of Peter Solomon. The following weeks after publication, the callers started getting callbacks from the number. Some would be told to drive to locations, or given different numbers to call back.
So can I call the number safely?
The novel’s publisher, Doubleday, told whomever was concerned that it was indeed a hoax, and that themselves and the Random House legal team would be looking to take legal action. So in summary, it is no longer safe to call this number.
